{"id":76,"date":"2015-08-17T13:34:27","date_gmt":"2015-08-17T13:34:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lipstickliesandlupus.com\/main\/?p=76"},"modified":"2015-08-17T13:34:27","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T13:34:27","slug":"curli-could-be-making-you-sick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lipstickliesandlupus.com\/main\/?p=76","title":{"rendered":"Curli Could Be Making You Sick"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Temple University scientists make breakthrough in lupus research<\/h1>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/lipstickliesandlupus.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wanda-writes-about-lupus.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-77\" src=\"http:\/\/lipstickliesandlupus.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/wanda-writes-about-lupus-247x300.png\" alt=\"wanda writes about lupus\" width=\"247\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>On July 6, 2015, scientist at Temple University issued a press release about the research they have been conducting with regards to lupus.<\/p>\n<p>This research, headed by \u00c7agla T\u00fckel and Stefania Gallucci, found that biofilm &#8211; or bacterial communities in the body \u2013 may be what is provoking the onset of lupus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically biofilms are these bacterial communities,\u201d says T\u00fckel, an assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at TUSM. \u201cAnd when these communities are formed, they are very resistant to treatment. And actually what we found is happening with these biofilms is there is this protein called an amyloid protein. We think there could be a link between biofilm associated diseases and amyloid associated diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a specific protein of interest, an amyloid called curli. T\u00fckel says curli is currently being treated with antibodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thinking maybe the flares in lupus could be associated with the spikes in the curli antibodies and maybe this could be a biomarker for the disease,\u201d T\u00fckel says. \u201cAnother thing is the mechanism \u2013 how acceleration of lupus is caused in a patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study is suggesting that underlying infections may actually trigger the disease,\u201d says Galluci, the associate chair of microbiology and immunology and an associate professor in microbiology and immunology at TUSM. \u201cIt\u2019s important to go and study ways to better diagnose these underlying infections and treat them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their next step will be to begin looking at patients using this information.<\/p>\n<p>The research at TUSM was supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.niaid.nih.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\">National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fccc.edu\/\">Fox Chase Cancer Center<\/a>-Temple University Nodal grant, the Lupus Research Institute Innovation Research Grant, the Lupus Foundation\u2019s Goldie Simon Preceptorship Award and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/\">National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>From the life and mind of Lupus Patient Wanda M.
